The Role: Strategic Materials Controller

About the Role
An established manufacturing business based in Gainsborough is seeking a Strategic Materials Controller to play a key role in optimising raw material planning and stock management across multiple UK sites.
Reporting to the Senior Purchasing Manager, this position acts as a central link between Purchasing, Operations, Technical, Sales and Commercial teams. The role is responsible for improving communication, reducing aged stock and waste, and maximising financial performance through effective materials planning and demand forecasting.
You will be the subject matter expert for material optimisation, ensuring supply is balanced with demand while maintaining consistent and efficient processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with Purchasing, Operations, Technical, Sales and Commercial teams to support an effective materials management strategy
- Implement and continuously improve strategic materials management processes and procedures
- Support Sales & Operations Planning (SIOP) activity, including analysis and review
- Analyse sales intelligence, forecasts and historical data to identify trends and cost-saving opportunities
- Monitor forecast demand versus actual demand, identifying changes and emerging trends
- Manage stock and forecasting processes, driving continuous improvement across the business
- Support resolution of supply and demand issues, including proposing raw material purchase orders
- Introduce and manage safety stock levels to meet customer demand without excessive inventory
- Drive the reduction of aged and obsolete stock
- Monitor and improve material availability and service levels
- Contribute to sustainability initiatives within raw material procurement
- Promote best practice and a culture of continuous improvement
- Undertake additional duties as required to support business needs
Relationship Management
- Encourage strong collaboration and communication across departments
- Promote sharing of best practice and lessons learned
- Maintain clear, proactive communication on key issues affecting materials and supply
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Previous experience in Supply Chain, Procurement, or Materials Planning
- Working knowledge of ERP systems
- Strong analytical and reporting skills
- Confident presenting information to stakeholders at all levels
- Full UK driving licence
