Role: Field Service Engineer
Permanent Role
Location: Alfreton (ideally based within 20 miles)
Rate: £15–£18 per hour (£31,200–£37,440 annually) + monthly bonus potential
Hours: 40-hour contract + overtime + on-call rota available
(Flexibility required, as some work will take place outside normal working hours.)
Van: Provided for business use
Training: Full OEM training including advanced diagnostics
Holidays: 22 days (rising to 24 days after 3 years) + bank holidays
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer to join a reputable and well-established equipment and machinery service provider operating across the Midlands. This role involves travelling directly to customer sites to diagnose mechanical and electrical faults, carry out repairs, complete testing, and ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently.
You will cover a regional patch including Derbyshire, Mansfield, Nottingham, Derby, Staffordshire, Birmingham, and Leicester. Travel is paid from site to home, not depot to depot.
This is a hands-on, autonomous role suited to an engineer with strong technical abilities, excellent customer service, and the confidence to manage repair work independently.
Key Objectives
- Receive electronic instructions via handheld PDA or similar device when breakdowns occur
- Complete thorough risk assessments for all tasks and maintain safe working procedures
- Diagnose equipment faults and liaise with your Supervisor/Manager for repair authorisation
- Complete all assigned work within agreed timescales
- Maintain a consistent, high standard of workmanship
- Identify additional work where required and seek approval before proceeding
- Ensure clear communication with management regarding progress, delays, or complications
- Maintain adherence to all on-site and company safety standards
- Treat customer property with care and ensure minimal disruption to their operations
- Ensure company tools, vehicles, and equipment are used safely and responsibly
- Complete accurate job documentation (electronic or written), detailing all work carried out
- Obtain required parts from stores or approved suppliers
- Carry out mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diagnostic work on equipment
- Conduct functional testing after repairs to ensure equipment is operational and safe
- Communicate technical issues clearly to customers when required
- Notify supervisor promptly when deadlines cannot be achieved or additional repairs are needed
- Represent the company professionally at all times
- Maintain strong discipline, punctuality, and time management
- Achieve minimum customer satisfaction standards set by management
- Build and maintain positive relationships with customer personnel on site
The Candidate
- Several years of experience within the plant, industrial, construction, heavy equipment, or machinery sectors
- Strong diagnostic competence across hydraulics, engines, electrical systems, and mechanical components
- OEM or dealer-level experience highly beneficial
- Full, clean UK driving licence
- Ability to work independently, with excellent problem-solving skills
- Good communication skills, with confidence when dealing with customers
- Resides within 20 miles of the Alfreton depot
