The Role & Responsibilities of the Assistant Accountant

Cash Book Reconciliation:

  • Maintain and update multi-currency cash books and accounts.
  • Record daily ledger entries (nominal, sales, and purchase) and reconcile with the general ledger.
  • Ensure accurate recording of receipts, foreign exchange transactions, and bank charges.

Bank Reconciliation:

  • Weekly reconciliation of bank balances between cashbooks, systems, and bank statements for management approval.

Payments:

  • Review and prepare payment lists (BACs, foreign, and cheques) for approval.
  • Calculate exchange rate gains/losses, process ad-hoc payments, and verify expense claims.

Credit Control:

  • Manage accounts receivable, chasing overdue accounts and resolving queries.
  • Report on aged debts to head office twice a month.

Reconciliations:

  • Assist with balance sheet reconciliations to audit standards.
  • Reconcile cash expenses, petty cash, purchase ledgers, and credit card expenses.

Taxation:

  • Calculate and submit VAT returns, Tax, and international VAT bi-monthly or quarterly.

Month-End Processes:

  • Perform reconciliations for sales ledgers, cashbooks, foreign exchange, intercompany accounts, purchase ledgers, and stock control.
  • Process accruals, update spreadsheets, and handle journals as necessary.
