Role: Graduate Engineer (Research and Development)

Overview of the Graduate engineer

2fawcett are recruiting for a R&D Engineer based in Derby.

This is an exciting role to report directly to the Managing Director, working closely with the chartered engineer and chairman to develop existing and new products.

You will also get the opportunity to design and build amazing products used by some of the largest utility businesses in Europe and work closely with their research and innovation teams to support their business targets.

The applicant must be practical, enthusiastic, flexible and hard-working to work effectively

alongside our friendly team.

Core Responsibilities

  • Experimental Prototyping – Create working prototypes using cutting edge manufacturing equipment and CNC machines
  • Product Design – combining knowledge of design, engineering and manufacturing processes to create innovative new products
  • Research & Development Lab – Plan and carry out rigorous development testing of new and existing products to British and international standards
  • New product Integration – Design and implementation of new product lines and manufacturing specifications
  • Material handling and characterisation
  • Good lab practice in terms of safety, diligence and accurate record keeping
  • Operation of test rigs to enable assessment of product performance
  • Data analysis, processing, and reporting
  • Research and keeping up to date with material developments in the sector
  • Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology, including applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production
  • Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.
  • Prepare reports, manuscripts, proposals, and technical manuals for use by other scientists and requestors, such as sponsors, customers, partners and potential partners.
  • Determine ways to strengthen or combine materials or develop new materials with new or specific properties for use in a variety of products and applications.
  • Compiling, coding, categorising, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying
  • information or data
  • Patent Applications – prepare reports and drawings for patent applications
  • A data driven person with the ability to apply basic concepts of algebra and geometry.
  • Adaptability and teamwork; you must be ready to adapt to changes, solve problems and engage in jobs that are outside of your job spec.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory safety including ability to follow risk assessments and COSHH assessments.
  • Ability to communicate with colleagues at all levels within the business
  • Willingness to pass on knowledge including training of other team members when required
  • Possess strong technical lab skills and an excellent understanding of materials are critical along with a passion to push the boundaries of material chemistry.

Driving licence and own transport essential.

  • Work in line with Health & Safety site requirements

40 hours per week

  • Monday – Thursday – 8:00am – 5:00pm Friday 8:00am – 2:30pm
  • Variations to these hours and overtime may be asked of you dependent on production needs.

Qualification and Experience: • Degree in a Materials Science, Engineering or equivalent
